Today I found a vintage (40's, probably) large-pebble-grain black leather Schell doctor's bag at a neighbor's garage sale for $5. After a liberal application of saddle soap, it's a gorgeous thing, 17" x 10" x 9" with leather covered handles and working hinges and latch. I have to find a box before I can list it on Ebay though. The shipping will be really something, it's heavy, at least 5 lbs. I don't have a box the right size here, or anything close to the right size. These things seem to go between $20-50 on Ebay depending on bidder mood and item condition. Evidently they're very collectible....this one looked like it had been sitting in somebody's garage for 40 years, it was that dusty. It looks beautiful now. I sent it up with MIL so FIL could look at it, because she and I wondered if it might be elephant hide, or was it just embossed cowhide? He says cowhide.
So that was this morning. Then MIL and I went out to Ruby's Diner with the girls for lunch, then across the street to the nursery for primulas (not primroses, I've been mistaken all this time), then back across to the Hanna Andersson outlet for, I thought, a few pairs of tights for the girls. But she kept finding wonderful little outfits on the 50%-off-lowest-marked-price and they got an outfit each, and Emmaline got pajamas. Plus all the tights. I would never ever ask her to do this, but I'm grateful when she offers, because Hanna clothes are such wonderful quality and they just wear like iron. And even at 50% off the last marked price they're usually $10 a piece, and so are the tights (actually more like $15 each) so I don't go shopping there for 4 kids very often. I think it's fun for her to shop for the girls. She only had boys, herself.
I have to figure out what to do about my poor right foot. I may have mentioned before that I suffer from inflammation of the plantar fasciitis, which means my foot had terrible burning pain in the arch. I thought my arch was collapsing, that's how severe the pain was. I went to the foot doctor for orthotics - which I got - but they don't work right if I wear my Birkenstocks (I mean, I cannot feel any support under my arch). I have worn nothing but Birkenstocks for oh, 15 or 20 years, because when I wear anything else I get blisters between my toes. So I've put these orthotics in my workout shoes and have been wearing no other shoes but these since. I think you can predict what has happened. A nasty blister between my little toe and the one next to it. The skin actually cracked (I got it to heal) but mostly right now it itches like mad. I don't know what to do for it. If there's a toe-separator device out there, I'd like to know about it. But it has to stay *on*. I've tried the little gel-lined tube thingies you put on your toe...they slip off. I've tried bandaids. They stay on, but they're not thick enough to hold the toes apart and keep them from rubbing. So my foot feels fine except my little toe and the one next to it itch like mad. If I have to choose between the two evils....I don't want to choose between the two evils.
I suppose the next option is to get different shoes, but I've never yet found a shoe with a generous toe box that also has adequate arch support.
I got my ebay listings done earlyish today. That is to say, I listed 2 of the big stack of items mom gave me to list, that she bought and was going to sell but never got around to, and 2 items I'm selling for a friend, and did pictures of the leather doctor's bag. That's about all I can get done. If I have pictures and measurements done (these days, I'll usually do a whole bunch of pictures at once, and edit them...that's one day's work; then I'll get all the weights and measurements, that's another day's work....then I'll go through and do a bunch of store listings at once, because all I really have to do is write the descriptions and work down the list of measurements and weights. On a really good day I might get 9 items listed, but it's taken me 3 days to get there. I don't know how people do hundreds of items a day (and some do) unless they're selling dozens of identical items (and some do). It's all I can do, to do what I'm doing....and keep up on the laundry, the meals, reading to the kids, overseeing their "paperwork" (workbook stuff for math & English), cleaning...I hardly have time to MUSH anymore. But instead of sitting up late as I often do, writing ebay descriptions after the kids go to bed, I got done early and I'm going to sleep early.
There's a lot to be said for sleeping early. :D

Schell bag pictures:
For the record, I stopped back at the yard sale today and got the history of the bag: The older woman holding the sale is a doctor (retired?). She bought the bag 30 or so years ago ("A long time ago," she said) and never used it. It travelled all around the world with her, but she never used it for a doctor's bag. It got a few scuffs travelling around the world, but not too many as you can see. The top can be opened fully and the hinges will keep it open for you. The leather is stiff, but my FIL (a doctor, with a smaller such bag of his own) says it's supposed to be stiff (he also is sure it's embossed cowhide, despite the elephant-skin look). The pouch inside is extremely stiff. I don't know if it needs moisturising because I don't know what it was like new, but I have neats' foot oil here and would be willing to give it some. It weighs 93 oz, according to my little electronic postal scale, so a little bit less than 6 lbs. A box suitable for shipping it would add another 2-3 lbs to the weight, I think. Hopefully not that much, but I have to find a box first. One side, with latch (works, no key), name plate left blank
Other side, with small gougey scuff
Top view. Handles are leather-wrapped.
Bottom, full size
Bottom, close up for grain
One end. Both ends look similar.

As for a possible price? I'd LOVE to get $55 (plus shipping) for it. Yes I know I already told you what I paid for it. But that's what I'd hope for it if put it on Ebay, and probably about what I'd get....that seems about average for the size, type, and condition. There are other types that go much higher, but I didn't find one of those. :D Of course I'll box and ship anywhere (probably FedEx - they're cheapest for heavy items) or arrange to meet somewhere if you're local. I don't gouge on shipping costs. And you could check my feedback on Ebay (chotii) in case you worry about that sort of thing.
It's a lovely bag. MIL says it smells a bit musty from age, but not mildewy, and no odor of cigarette smoke or anything like that. I'm just itching to give it a good feeding of neatsfoot oil, but maybe best to let a new owner do that.

Re: Schell bag pictures:
*covet* It is a lovely piece. I've thought about it over a cup of tea and realized it really isn't practical for me, due to the weight of it before contents. To say nothing of which shipping it to the east coast will be an arm and a leg. Best of luck with it on Ebay, I'm sure it will find a great home. Thanks for the speedy info though!

What I can't figure out, is how you found me? People are always commenting in my journal and I don't know why!! Or who!!

Re: Schell bag pictures:
I have been reading your LJ for a couple of years, more or less by accident. There's someone else on my friends-list, [Unknown LJ tag]. You see the problem already. I accidently put you on my friends list when I tried to add her. I stumbled into the middle of your planning when your daughter was having serious eating problems, when you were heading out to a clinic with her for an intensive week to work on the problem. You wrote really compellingly and interestingly about the intricacies of the problem and the day-to-day effects on you and her and the rest of your family. I never could bring myself to unfriend you!I've been admiring your perserverance when things are tough, and the rich family experiences you write about so lovingly, from afar. I'm sure I should have said something much much sooner. It's funny how I've almost forgotten, over time, that you actually don't know me.
So now I have to ask ...

Re: Schell bag pictures:
That's funny. :) Yes, I saw Chhotii on your friends list and wondered. And once, I sent a number of emails to lirren at livejournal when I meant to send them to lirrin, to the other poor woman's great consternation. She eventually wrote me to gently correct my error.Yes, as a matter of fact, I do know R_Ness. Vaguely. Through (I believe) DinoMUSH, a chat server. It is a very small world indeed. :) You could ask 'em about Chotii, I go by the same name pretty much everywhere.
And hello. :)
By the way, if you think I'm asking too much for the doctor's bag, please feel free to haggle. I'm cool about haggling.

Re: Schell bag pictures:
I seriously considered the haggling. And then I seriously considered stuffing one more thing, even a pretty one, into my overstuffed closets and where would I put it and how often would I use it, really? Because it would be heavy compared to the bags I'm used to, and full, even more so.Let alone the fact that I'm really supposed to be reining in discretionary spending, not looking for more... And decided not to put you to that trouble.
